A fire broke out at Fenway Park Sunday morning as workers were in the process of removing a temporary suite from the third base side.
The fire was sparked as the workers were using a torch.
"They're doing a lot of renovations at Fenway Park, and one of the things they're doing is taking out some temporary luxury boxes and replacing them with seats," said Deputy Chief Joseph Fleming. "In doing that, they have to do some cutting and welding with torches because they have to cut the steal.
Fleming said fortunately there was a paid firefighter detail on site and he noticed a couple sparks had gotten behind the wall, which had started a smoldering fire.
"So he called us in and we got here very, very quickly," Fleming said. "The only issue because of the construction and because of the layout, it is sometimes difficult to get the hose line in certain sections of Fenway Park up where they are doing construction."
Fleming said the fire inside the historic park was quickly extinguished.
"There was almost no damage because the only part that was burned was stuff that they are throwing away basically," Fleming said.
Christian Bjorbaek said he was shocked as he stood on his balcony in Kenmore Square and could see smoke coming from Fenway Park and decided to capture it on camera.
"I saw black smoke coming up from Fenway Park," said Bjorbaek. "I saw the fire truck and the firemen running up the ladder. I said to my wife, 'Let's film this.'"
No one was injured in the small fire.
Workers successfully removed a temporary suite from the first base side a couple days ago.
